The idea that the court system allows, and let's others perform the death penalty is simply barbaric to me. That in this day and age, murder is being carried out legally and is endorsed by the government is simply wrong. Not only is it morally wrong, but the death penalty system is corrupt. Most of the death row inmates are black, come from impoverished areas, and have not had adequate education. The system is skewed against the poor and minorities from the start. I come from a almost idealistic standpoint, but death cannot be the way to solve problems. Let's say the person that is on death row killed people and the families want retribution, but let's look at the facts. That murderer has a family, was a child, was a good person or at least a better person at some point in his or her life. Killing him or her will not bring the victims' loved ones peace. Someone may say the age old phrase "If he had killed your sister..." or daughter, son, father, mother, I would want them dead and yes, while that may be true, the government should not endorse it. If I wanted to seek revenge, I would take it into my own hands, knowingly commit a crime, and then turn myself into the proper authorities. That would be my personal decision and I would face the legal consequences. The government however, should not take the sentimental standpoint and instead take the position of authority. One that is impartial and unbiased by emotions.
Instead, the murderer should be placed in solitary confinement, with no electronics or other leisurely past times. This would not be conventional incarceration. It would lack entertainment, cable, and interaction. It would be a simple incarceration, where they would sit, by themselves, and have nothing to think about but what they've done. They would not be allowed outside. There would be one hour spent in a larger cell, alone, for exercise and the cell would be big enough for the inmate to walk around in. There would be a flat rate for each such cell and each prisoner would be given the same amount of food. The cost to taxpayers would be kept to a bare minimum.
What should also be considered is the fact that once people become "bad people" no one tries to understand them। Seeing past the person to the reasons they are the person. Once they're gone society never tries to get them back.
